Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 sugar cube or 1/2 tsp simple syrup
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Splash of water
  • Orange peel
  • Ice
  • Wood chips or a smoking gun (for smoking the glass)

Instructions

  1. If using a smoking gun, fill the Old Fashioned glass with smoke and let it sit while you prepare the cocktail. If using wood chips, light them and place the glass over the smoke to infuse it.
  2. In a mixing glass, muddle the sugar cube with a few dashes of bitters and a splash of water until the sugar is dissolved. If using simple syrup, combine it with the bitters and water.
  3. Add the bourbon and a large ice cube to the mixing glass. Stir gently for about 20-30 seconds until well chilled.
  4. Strain the mixture into the smoked Old Fashioned glass over a large ice cube.
  5. Express the oils from an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel over the glass and using a lighter or kitchen torch to gently heat it. Rub the peel around the rim of the glass and drop it into the drink.

Notes

Tips for the Best Smoky Old Fashioned

  • Bourbon Choice: Use a high-quality bourbon with rich, robust flavors that will stand up to the smoke.
  • Sugar: Adjust the amount of sugar to your preference, adding more for a sweeter drink.
  • Smoking the Glass: For a stronger smoke flavor, let the glass sit with the smoke for a few extra minutes before pouring the cocktail.

    1. Yes, you can achieve a similar effect by lighting wood chips or using a smoking board and capturing the smoke in the glass.
