Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine (750 ml), such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 3-4 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 1/4 cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
  • Additional orange slices, cinnamon sticks, or star anise for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan, combine the red wine, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, honey (or sugar), and orange juice.
  2. Heat the Wine: Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and warm the wine gently. Do not let it boil, as boiling will burn off the alcohol and alter the flavor.
  3. Simmer and Infuse: Reduce the heat to low and let the wine simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to dissolve the honey or sugar and infuse the spices.
  4. Add Brandy (Optional): If using, stir in the brandy during the last few minutes of simmering for an extra kick.
  5. Strain and Serve: Remove the cloves, cinnamon sticks, and star anise. Ladle the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses.
  6. Garnish: Garnish with additional orange slices, a cinnamon stick, or a star anise for a festive touch.
  7. Enjoy: Serve warm and enjoy the rich, spiced flavors of this cozy mulled wine!

Notes

  • Adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more or less honey or sugar.
  • Experiment with different spices, such as nutmeg or allspice, for a unique twist.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with grape juice or apple cider.
