Ingredients

  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup rum, bourbon, or brandy (optional)
  • Whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk the Egg Yolks and Sugar: In a medium bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until the mixture is smooth and pale in color.
  2. Heat the Milk Mixture: In a saucepan, combine the milk, heavy cream, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until the mixture is just about to simmer, but do not let it boil.
  3. Temper the Eggs: Slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg yolks while whisking constantly to temper the eggs and prevent curdling.
  4. Cook the Eggnog: Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon (around 160°F or 70°C).
  5. Add Vanilla and Chill: Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. If desired, stir in your choice of rum, bourbon, or brandy. Let the eggnog cool, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  6. Serve: Pour the chilled eggnog into glasses, top with whipped cream, and sprinkle with a pinch of nutmeg for garnish.
  7. Enjoy: Serve and enjoy this creamy, homemade holiday treat!

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, simply omit the alcohol and add a bit more vanilla for extra flavor.
  • If you prefer a thicker eggnog, use more heavy cream and less milk.
  • Store homemade eggnog in the refrigerator for up to 3 days in a sealed container.
